Book editing to make your manuscript sound super professional and smooth!
Edits Personalized for You! YOUR VOICE, BUT BETTER!
All manuscripts go into editing at a different stage. Its structure might need to be redone; one or more sentences within it might need attention; a completed book might require a fine-tuned layout before it goes into the format.
Our book editing services are geared toward that stage. Developmental editing, line and copy work, or proofreading are acceptable, depending upon the manuscript. You have visibility into what has changed in tracked changes and comments provide context to any changes made.
We are a book editing company and we are as concerned with restraint as correction. Good editing should make the book easier to read while leaving the author recognizable on every page. Our book editing and proofreading services are done based on that standard.
Four Ways We Can
WORK ON YOUR MANUSCRIPT
Each service solves a different kind of problem. We recommend one that helps move your manuscript forward.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
Where we work on the book in its entirety is developmental editing. We read with attention to order, pacing, clarity of purpose, function of scenes and chapters, and areas where we might go astray. In nonfiction, this may involve bolstering the argument and structuring the material. In fiction and memoir, it can involve paying attention to the structure, the movement of characters, continuity, and the need for expansion or contraction of the story.
Our developmental editing services feature an editorial report that highlights and prioritizes recommended edits and manuscript notes for places they are most likely to be helpful. You are leaving with a clear revision plan and know what more the book needs.
COPY EDITING & LINE EDITING
Line editing services concentrate on the movement of a writing from sentence to sentence. Awkward phrasing is tightened; rhythm and transitions are polished; repetition is marked; and your natural voice is maintained. A copy editing service is more concerned with correctness and consistency, checking the grammar, punctuation, usage, capitalization and style throughout the manuscript.
We can merge both passes if the book requires it from our professional copy editing services. Tracked changes, comments only when it helps, and style sheet to maintain consistency of names, terms and editorial decisions throughout the work.
PROOFREADING BEFORE PRINT
Proofreading is the last stage of quality control after editing and revisions. A book proofreading service can identify the less-than-perfect typos and punctuation, as well as spacing and consistency that can remain after multiple rounds of revision.
We are editing the text that is ready for layout or publication, our aim is not to rewrite it but to get it right. If the composition is still not ready for being printed in a heavy print, we will inform you before starting the proofreading.
MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE & ASSESSMENT
If you don't know how much editing your manuscript may require, begin with an assessment. We've discussed enough of the book to judge the writing and structure and the level of polish, and provide you with a direct suggestion about what you should do next.
This is a handy alternative for authors who wish to put themselves in the hands of professionals and receive their input before deciding to submit the manuscript for an extensive edit. The assessment might also enable you to make revisions of your own prior to submitting the manuscript for a more targeted pass.
Thoughtful Editing
AN EDITING PROCESS YOU CAN ACTUALLY FOLLOW
We Scope Before We Quote
Correct scoping is the foundation of affordable book editing services. This means that the manuscript is reviewed first and only the required level of work is quoted.
An Editor Who Fits The Book
Genre matters. There are conventions for each of the four kinds of books. There are specific conventions for each of the four types of books. We also consider age-appropriate language, read aloud flow and reading level in our editing services for children's books.
You Can See Every Edit
It should never be mysterious to have your book professionally edited. Tracked changes will indicate any changes and comments will describe changes in context. You may accept, reject or question anything.
Your Decision Stays Yours
Recommendations are provided along with reasons. The final say is yours on the manuscript, and we'll advise you when we think making a change is a good idea, but respect an editorial preference and won't consider it a guideline. That's what we consider a job done properly by a professional book editing service.

Good Editing Questions,
ANSWERED
Where to look for the best book editing service?
The ideal book editing service lets you know exactly what is involved before you begin the task and maintains the author's tone. A sample edit is beneficial since it allows you to evaluate the editor's choices on your own article prior to committing to them.
How is your line editing service different from a copy editing service?
Line editing focuses on style, flow, clarity, and the effectiveness of the sentences. Copy editing is more focused on grammar, usage, punctuation, consistency and discrepancies within the text. In many manuscripts both are used in the same pass.
Do you offer children's book editing services?
Yes. We edit picture books, early readers, middle grade, and other children's manuscripts for age, language level, pacing, and read aloud. The scope is customized for the format and audience.
Can I hire a professional copy editor without Developmental editing?
Yes. If it is already working, then we can jump straight to copy or line editing. We pre-evaluate the manuscript in order to keep the scope focused on work that will add value.
Can you offer affordable book proofreading services for lengthy books?
Yes. Rates vary according to length and difficulty of the work. You can find out what is included before you make the commitment.
