Which file formats do I actually receive?

A validated ePub 3 file, which every major retailer now accepts, plus a Kindle-ready file for Amazon KDP. Illustrated books also get a fixed-layout edition, and print projects include a press-ready interior PDF. You receive the working source files as well, so future corrections are straightforward.

What if a platform rejects my file?

It should not happen, because validation runs before handover. If a platform does flag something, we diagnose it, fix it and resupply at no cost.

Q: Can I just upload my Word document to Amazon instead?

You can, and sometimes it works acceptably. Word documents carry a lot of invisible formatting, though, and automatic converters have to guess what it meant. That is where broken indents, stray fonts, images landing in the wrong place and a table of contents that does nothing all come from. Proper formatting removes the guesswork, and it is a one-time cost on a book you hope to sell for years.

Q: Will my eBook look the same on every device?

It will be correct on every device, which is a better goal than identical. Reflowable eBooks are designed to adapt to the reader's chosen font size, screen width and colour theme, so we build your file to behave properly under all of those conditions rather than to look fixed under one. If your book genuinely needs the page to stay fixed, that is what a fixed-layout edition is for.

Q: How long does formatting take?

A standard reflowable text book takes three to five working days. Illustrated and fixed-layout books take one to two weeks depending on page count, and print interior typesetting is usually one to two weeks.

Most books need the first. Illustrated books need the second. Print needs the third. And plenty of already-published files just need the fourth.

REFLOWABLE EBOOKS FOR TEXT BOOKS

This is the right format for the overwhelming majority of books: novels, memoirs, business books, self-help, anything that is mostly words. Reflowable means the text rearranges itself to fit whatever device, font size and orientation the reader chose, which is precisely why readers like eBooks.

It also means you cannot control the page, so everything has to be built relatively rather than absolutely. We use semantic styles instead of manual spacing, scalable type instead of fixed point sizes, and proper chapter breaks instead of a run of empty paragraphs. Drop caps, scene break ornaments, epigraphs, block quotes and verse are all set so they survive a reader tripling the font size.

We test in dark mode too, because a hard-coded black text colour on a dark background is one of the most common and most avoidable eBook faults.

What actually comes in what file formats?

Finalized package will be subject to project. Most books are provided with a production version PDF file, and for eBook projects, EPUB and the agreed source files may also be provided. Deliverables are confirmed prior to work commencing.

CAN I JUST UPLOAD MY WORD DOCUMENT TO AMAZON INSTEAD?

It is sometimes possible to accept a Word document, but it is not guaranteed there will be a clean reading experience. Manual formatting is more control of styles, navigation, spacing, images, and common formatting problems that occur after automatic formatting.

WILL MY EBOOK LOOK THE SAME ON EVERY DEVICE?

A reflowable eBook is one that will adapt to your screen and reader preferences: Line breaks and page numbers may change. The structure, hierarchy, navigation and the behavior of the images should not change when displaying.

HOW LONG DOES FORMATTING TAKE?
